Question by funcakes: Job eligibility after receiving DUI?
I have a DUI from 2005 and a second from 2007. I regret my mistakes and feel ashamed about my past but I now lead a sober and clean life. Anyhow, I finished my bachelor’s last year and have completed three internships in non profit work within in the past three years. I am eager to move forward and develop my career. I am interested in returning to school for an M.A. in Public Administration and I would like to pursue a career in public or non profit administration. I recently spoke to a Carver county (in Minnesota) employee that stated that with my driving record it would be impossible for me to pursue a career in public or non profit admin. Understandably, I would be considered a liability. I am looking for advice about this. Should I continue to apply for jobs that will likely never contact me for an interview? Is there anyone reading this that has a similar past that has successfully pursued a career in public or non profit admin? I don’t want to waste more money on an education in which my job prospects will be slim to none. I can redevelop new career goals if there is no chance that I could be hired for state, city, non profit, or county positions.

Also, aside from the areas listed above (i.e. state, city, non profit, and county positions) are there any other jobs or positions, besides driving jobs, that I should not bother applying for with my driving record?

Thanks in advance for all your help.

You should be okay with any job except as a driver.

Question by lilmsusa: dui after trying to commit suicide?
I just found out i had cervical cancer and my boyfriend had just broken up with me because of it, and 45 minutes prior to i had 1 shot of rumplemints. I tried to commit suicide by driving my car off the road. The end result was i had rolled my car 5 times, the first time was end over end and the driver side door came open, the 4 other times was side over side while my left leg was hanging out of the car. My ankle was smashed, and obviously i did not succeed. (Thank God) That was in november 08, I just recieved notice that I am being charged with 2 counts of dui and it is mid april 09. I am totaly scared i have never been in trouble in my entire life and i am 35. At the end of this month i go in for a mental evaluation. If anyone can give me some advice as to what i should do, my Blood alcohol level was 0.065.
After the accident in november I had to have a Hysterectomy in Jan due to the cancer. I started seing a psychiatrist and he has me on a bunch of meds that do not help. I have been on state disability since the wreck in the amount of $ 200.00 a month. So i can’t afford an attourney. And of course I didn’t tell the cop i tried to kill myself I told him there was a deer in the road. I heard that i should contact the DMV does anyone know anything about that?

You should probably check into a mental hospital, no joke.

Is the cancer terminal?

Question by Shiningami_Gurl: Sticky situation: Old DUI (about 6 years ago) and I’m returning after 6 years to the US with my baby?
Well I know it was a stupid move but I got a DUI right before I graduated University and right after that I moved to China to be a teacher and researcher. At the time of my DUI I wasn’t working, had NO money, never in trouble a day of my life and just released from 8 years in the Army…I just didn’t know what to do and when I got offered a job in China I took it. I went to the initial hearing and classes but never paid the fine because I was broke. I couldn’t go to my family for help because I just couldn’t face disappointing them…I was the only one to graduate university or do anything with my life but there really isn’t a big job market for an Anthropologist with a background in Asian studies in the US.

Now after 6 years I have to go back to the US to update my Chinese visa and will have to take my 1 yr old daughter with me. My hubby is Chinese and doesn’t have a visa yet so he can’t come with us and he’s working so I have to take her with me. I can’t afford to be arrested if I have her with me…not to mention my work is paying for my trip and I can only be gone for a week.

Can I get in and not be arrested? Or should I just stay here and find another way. I would love to go home…I miss my family and they never met my daughter or husband yet. Any suggestions would be great…any help would be even more so.
FYI I no longer drink…since then. I am completely different and other then this I still have not been in trouble. I am still very naive about this stuff and they never offered me any kind of legal counsel.

Best answer:

Answer by Nightrider
Best advice in this scenario would be to have a family member here in the States contact the Clerk of Courts that has jurisdiction on this charge. The problem here is that since you didn’t pay the fine, a warrant of arrest is sitting and waiting for you, which will be checked when you go through customs.

Bite the bullet, tell a family member what happened and see if they can find out who to pay and if by paying now, will this remove the warrant of arrest. (Some states only want the money, some want a person to stand in front of the Judge). Try to resolve this BEFORE returning to the USA.

Best of luck and I hope this is useful to you

Question by Rachelle Rachelle: How should i gain my parents trust back after a dui?
I am a freshman in college, and I recently got a dui about 5 days ago. My parents are really dissapointed in me and have only contacted me through short texts and emails. I just signed a lease for an apartment near campus with three of my friends, although my paretns have not signed the gaurantor agreement yet. They are now saying they cannot trust me and have told me to sign up for dorms, even though they already know i put down a deposit and filled out the paperwork for my lease. The only way to get out of it would probably be to sublease to someone. My parents have said stuff similiar to this when they are mad and later forgiven me and changed their minds. I am hoping that this turns out the same and I will still be able to live with my friends, and I want to prove to them that nothing like this is ever going to happen again and that i will be more responsible than ever living in an apartment next year. Does anyone have and advice or suggestion that could help me?? I have started to write a letter to them to let them know I am changing for the better and understand why they are so upset with me.
I do know how horrible of a thing this was and willl never do anything like it again, and have already gotten so much support from my friends up here, several of them have agreed with me to start doing activites not involving alcohol and finding different ways than partying to meet people and have fun, and im going to continue this pattern, but i just wish my parents knew how serious i am about this whole thing and what a wakeup call it was to me

It’s gonna take a while. Give it time and eventually they’ll forgive and forget. Something similar happens to me.

Question by wvuap372: Best Insurance Rate/Company after DUI/DWI?
I got a DUI about a year and a half ago (Yes, I know very stupid) I switched insurance companies after it happened to get a better rate. I am with Progressive now and paying about $ 190/month. I live in NC and drive a 10 year old Jeep Wrangler, I have an excellent driving record with no tickets or accidents, the only thing on my record is the DUI. Does anyone have any advice on which insurance company might offer the best rates or if there is anything I can do to lower my rate? Is there any way to get coverage without them checking my driving record and seeing my DUI???
Thanks

Best answer:

Answer by ☆ღWifey Wifeyღ☆
You need to be in a high risk company. Progressive is not a high risk company (I sell it) And no matter where you get your insurance they will run your social and DL # and pull up your record because that plays a major role in what your premium is. I would call a local independent agent and ask them to get you a quote in a high risk company.

Question by wisk: 20 year old brother got DUI in california the day after he was drinking. What i she going to go through?
My 20 year old brother was drinking last night(apparently a lot) with his friends in Santa Cruz california. Today he drove home (about a 2 to 3 hour drive home) He was almost home and got puuled over for speeding. He was aressted for a DUI. He breathed a BAC of .14 at 3:45 p.m. I think he’s screwed. ANyone have any advice that would help ANd what he might expect to be facing. He also wants to be a fireman but is now afraid that he is screwed because of this. He didn’t think that he was still drunk because he drank last night. He just thought he was hungover.
He is really a good kid and hasn’t been in trouble before and wouldn’t have driven if he knew that he would blow any BAC number

Best answer:

Question by barnum: Difficulty getting a job after a DUI arrest?
I was recently arrested with my 1st DUI. I have no other arrests in my past and the DUI did not involve any accidents(thank goodness). Unfortunately, this came at a time that I am seeking new employment. I was recently hired for a great RN position but the large corporation rescinded the offer when the DUI showed up on my background check.Any advice or help would be much appreciated. I did not lie on my job application as it only asked if I have been arrested for a felony. I am a great nurse but can understand their concern. Also, the company didn’t get the background check returned until after my fist day of orientation. Now they don’t want to pay me for the day. Is that legal? Thanks.

Best answer:

Answer by Jess K
Even if the job doesn’t want to hire you they need to pay you for the day you were there!!! Sue them if they don’t!!!!!! It’s illegal if they don’t pay you. Maybe next time you should try to tell them about ur DUI before they find out!

GOOD LUCK!

Question by mike A.: How long do you have to wait legally to drive again after smoking weed in California?
I smoked weed the night before, and I got into an accident the next day and I am being charged with felony dui. I had nothing on me when the accident happened and I also have a marijuana prescription. Can the court pull through with this charge? I live in California
Yes I did take a blood test to see the levels in my system and I didn’t refuse it I openly said yes.
To John, yes that is true the prosecution is going to have a difficult job proving that, but anyway I am going to be bringing a expert about marijuana and its effects for my defense, is that any good?

Best answer:

Answer by CK
The prescription is meaningless. Alcohol is legal but they still give out DUI’s for it. Same for weed. If they found it in your blood, you’re toast.

Question by NATAS: can i get judge to dismiss dui case after winning my dmv hearing?
my laywer won my dmv hearing cuz the cop didnt have probable cause and instead of observing me for the required 15 minutes he only gave me 9 minutes..on his narrative he said my speech was slured and on page 2 of the pas form he put speech was normal,he got my last name wrong and also my race..my laywer made the cop sound like an idiot at the dmv hearing and if the cop didnt have probable cause why is the district attorney still trying to persue this case?D.A. already offered me a wet reckless but forget that noise im trying my luck in a jury trial
@bradley,i wasnt even driving and car was inoperable and theres evidence the cop didnt have proble cause and you want me to take a deal?wet reckless is basicly a watered down dui..my job requires having a clean license so its take my chances with a jury or lose my job anyway by takeing a deal?!

Yes, they can, so long as you can take as much clothes from a shop without paying for them.
